my social media exodus

my social media exodus

social-media

Today I deleted my Twitter (X) account. It was in "frozen" state since Elon took over of Twitter, but now, when I see how Elon acts and how he is engaged into politics and supporting far right, even in Europe I can not participate in social media like this, fueled by hate.

The same with Facebook (meta) accounts. I deleted my FB and Instagram accounts, never had Threads. Mark is going the same way under Trump, he has no moral spine, but actually everyone should know this, just remeber how he became a FB founder.

I remember around 10 years ago, I was probably in High school, and FB was something that everybody has. I wasn't one of them, actually I was pushed by teacher to create account, because she told me that I should stay in touch with my classmates to catch up with work when I'm absent (at the time I was sick and skipping a lot of classes). But I was really against FB, since I was already "into computers", I knew that this is not the best idea to share everything about yourself on portals like that. But I decided to give it a try, and to be honest, after 10 years of social media I can tell that I was right then. Social media gave me nothing, I wasted a lot of time there and sites like FB, through the years, has revealed their real faces - they always wanted our attention to sell more ads, while pretending to connect us with others. If you want to stay in touch, use your phone, or direct messaging apps like Signal. You don't need FB. And I understand if you liked FB years ago, when the wall was actually something assembled from posts of your friends or family, but algorithms has changed it to keep you glued to the screen, to show you more stuff you may like and create informational bubble.

And now it is even worse, Google, Meta, X all these platforms are falling into AI slop. Meta started this project where they create AI personas that can post their own, generated stuff and engage with real people. What's the point of all of this? I think we all know the answer.

I think, or I really, really hope, that we are slowly entering post-social-media era of the internet. Maybe it will bring us closer to real world again, because actually the real world is burning right now. Literally, as I'm writing this piece, there are massive fires in Los Angeles, gloabal temperatures are rising, and againg, as it was in 1939, far-right is gaining more supporters, while persons like Musk or Suck... sorry, Zuck, are inflaming more conflicts through their platforms.

It's a shame, that so many people in tech sector still work for them. Everyone who has some sense of justice and moral spine should reconsider leaving. Guys, I understand the money, but on what will you spend this money in destroyed world? And don't even start with work problem, if you worked for Meta or Twitter you will find work in any other industry than this.

To all of you who read this, stay safe, sadly we are entering dangerous times, and we can only fight it by working together, not against each other!
